Perspectives - Columbus

Two different perspectives of the same story... Students were separated into two groups. The first  group sat through a read aloud of the book Encounter, by Jane Yolen. The second group listened to a read aloud of the book Discover The Life Of An Explorer: Christopher Columbus, by Trish Kline. They were then asked to write down their thoughts, feelings, and opinions about Columbus and his explorations. When the class came back together, students were paired with a member of the opposite group. They shared their opinions and engaged in conversations about whether or not Columbus was a HERO. Needless to say, there were very strong opposing views in each pair's discussion.

HOT SEATS
As a continuing exercise, two students from our class took on the roles of Christopher Columbus and the young protagonist from the book, Encounter. Students  were told that they would be given the opportunity to ask questions or seek clarification from each character. Questions were very convincingly answered from the perspectives of each character.
